Our office has a dedicated practice geared toward appellate advocacy in both state and federal appeals courts. Our team includes former law clerks who have served in state and federal trial and appellate courts. We work to ensure that cases are optimally positioned to deal with an appeal. This can mean defending trial court results or working to overturn those results. We can take cases on behalf of individual entities or clients, or we can serve as insurance panel appointed counsel to handle an appeal when it would benefit from a fresh set of eyes.
Our appellate attorneys use a different arsenal of skills than those employed at trial. Our attorneys work to translate technical and legal terms into plain language that a much more generalist panel of judges can understand. A skilled appellate attorney can summarize and condense a long trial or complex legal issue, and the related arguments, into a brief that is limited in length. The usual focus on appeal is the questions of law that come up during the life of the case.
When needed, our appellate attorneys work closely with our trial litigators to preserve matters and issues during the trial proceedings. They provide both a fresh look at the issues for appeal and an objective view as to what issues may be the most compelling for the Court of Appeals or Supreme Court.
